Summary

The past and the present collide in the final installment of USA Today bestselling author Debra Webb’s Devlin & Falco series, threatening everything these two detectives care about。

Birmingham detectives Kerri Devlin and Luke Falco arrive at the scene of a double homicide to discover that nothing makes sense。 A woman and her child are dead, and though the husband says he killed them, the evidence says otherwise。 Why would a man confess to unspeakable murders he didn’t commit?

What starts as an open-and-shut case explodes into a web of new leads。 Devlin and Falco get to work tracking down every single one—including a disturbing connection between the murders and Falco’s dark past。

Falco knows the incident from eight years ago will jeopardize the partnership he’s built with Devlin, both on and off the job。 If he could go back, he would—but what happened happened, and there’s a murderer on the loose。 Devlin and Falco must slog through the pain to get to the truth; and so far the only truth they know is that everyone is lying。

Can't Go Back is an action-packed addition to the Devlin & Falco series。 Kerri Devlin and Luke Falco are detectives in the Major Investigations Division of the Birmingham, Alabama Police Department。 The chief calls them to be in charge of a case where the victims are his friends and needs their expertise to solve。 This is a case of a former undercover cop's wife and child dying in a fire that is obviously arson and personal。 There are several people that they need to interview but no one is real Can't Go Back is an action-packed addition to the Devlin & Falco series。 Kerri Devlin and Luke Falco are detectives in the Major Investigations Division of the Birmingham, Alabama Police Department。 The chief calls them to be in charge of a case where the victims are his friends and needs their expertise to solve。 This is a case of a former undercover cop's wife and child dying in a fire that is obviously arson and personal。 There are several people that they need to interview but no one is really talking。 The husband/father was badly injured and is not talking。 Until he confesses。 But it doesn't add up。 This story has many layers to unpeel and many surprises along the way。 The strange thing is the father was part of of Luke's old unit when he was undercover and the head is still his old Lieutenant。 And their relationship did not end well。 Can't Go Back is a real page-turner and edge of the seat read as one clue leads to another and a resolution that is complicated and multifaceted。 This is a mystery well done with visits from characters of the previous books。 Sweet ending and another winner。 I feel that it is best to read this series in order。 I received a complimentary ARC from Thomas & Mercer。 All thoughts and opinions are mine only。 。。。more

I am saddened that this is the last book for Devlin and Falco, but what an amazing finale。 Two strong main characters; Kerri Devlin, a female detective who is a badass and her partner in life and work, Luke Falco。 Luke has seen the worst the world can offer, but finds a new beginning through his relationship with Kerri。 The house of a former detective has been deliberately set on fire with his wife and child inside。 Although he tries to save them, it is too late。 Is someone trying to send a mess I am saddened that this is the last book for Devlin and Falco, but what an amazing finale。 Two strong main characters; Kerri Devlin, a female detective who is a badass and her partner in life and work, Luke Falco。 Luke has seen the worst the world can offer, but finds a new beginning through his relationship with Kerri。 The house of a former detective has been deliberately set on fire with his wife and child inside。 Although he tries to save them, it is too late。 Is someone trying to send a message to the former detective and if so, what? It is Kerri and Luke’s job to investigate the murders, even if it means questioning other members of law enforcement。 They will face harassment, uncooperative witnesses, and threats to their own safety, but will persevere until the final surprise ending。 I thought I had everything figured out, but once again Ms。 Webb proved me wrong。 A truly complex and twisted mystery。 I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation for an honest review。 (by paytonpuppy) 。。。more

As the relationship between Kerri and Luke gets more serious, Luke's past comes back to center stage。 I'm of two minds on this particular turn。 On one hand, I really wanted to get into his history but on the other, once again we have another case that is intertwined with the lives of the detectives。 But, it felt more natural and less forced like it did in the previous two books。 I appreciated how the answers weren't always clear cut。 You know tidy boxes aren't my thing。 I really liked how the ch As the relationship between Kerri and Luke gets more serious, Luke's past comes back to center stage。 I'm of two minds on this particular turn。 On one hand, I really wanted to get into his history but on the other, once again we have another case that is intertwined with the lives of the detectives。 But, it felt more natural and less forced like it did in the previous two books。 I appreciated how the answers weren't always clear cut。 You know tidy boxes aren't my thing。 I really liked how the characters are developing, their relationship, and how the approach their cases。 Another review states this is the final book in the series。 I hope they are wrong because I finally feel like the series foundation is set look forward to seeing the characters grow and the series expand。Thanks to NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer for a copy of the book。 This review is my own opinion。 。。。more

This book was full of twists and turns。 If you read the blurb, a mother and daughter die (in a fire) and the father/husband takes the blame。 But they soon realize he is lying。 Then the mothers of the husband and the wife tell lies。 Everyone in the book is lying and pretty soon you have NO idea what happened。 I really liked the relationship between the detectives。 This is the third installment in a series, and you don't HAVE to have read the other two, but I wish I had。 I feel lke I was really mi This book was full of twists and turns。 If you read the blurb, a mother and daughter die (in a fire) and the father/husband takes the blame。 But they soon realize he is lying。 Then the mothers of the husband and the wife tell lies。 Everyone in the book is lying and pretty soon you have NO idea what happened。 I really liked the relationship between the detectives。 This is the third installment in a series, and you don't HAVE to have read the other two, but I wish I had。 I feel lke I was really missing something。 However, I enjoyed this so much that I am going to go back to the first book in the series, and start from the beginning。 If you havent read the others, I suggest you do that to。 Something tells me you will get a lot more enjoyment from this book! Detectives Kerri Devlin and Luke Falco are called to the scene of a house fire where a woman and her child have died。 The Father confesses but the detectives don’t think he is guilty。 Why would he confess to something he didn’t do。 There were a lot of twists to this story but I had my suspicions about 1/3 into the book。 I liked seeing how Kerri and Luke’s relationship was growing and evolving。 This book is part of a series but could be read as a stand alone。 Thank you to the author for an advanc Detectives Kerri Devlin and Luke Falco are called to the scene of a house fire where a woman and her child have died。 The Father confesses but the detectives don’t think he is guilty。 Why would he confess to something he didn’t do。 There were a lot of twists to this story but I had my suspicions about 1/3 into the book。 I liked seeing how Kerri and Luke’s relationship was growing and evolving。 This book is part of a series but could be read as a stand alone。 Thank you to the author for an advanced readers copy for a fair review。 。。。more

Why would a man confess to the murders of his wife and child? This is just the beginning of puzzling leads that seem to go nowhere。 This final installment to Devlin and Falco series is riveting and suspenseful till last page。 Debra Webb has another winner to add to the impressive list! Why do these series have to end??!! Love this book!

Can't Go Back is the finale of the recently published Debra Webb trilogy of the Devlin and Falco series。 Having no prior knowledge of this detective team makes the previous cases and events unknown。 This time Devlin and Falco attend a double homicide that just doesn’t add up。 Why does the husband confess despite the evidence to the contrary? Devlin and Falco doubt the credibility of Logan's confession。 They know the in-laws (Logan's mum and Allison's mum) have something to hide。 As the mystery begins to reveal itself (slowly, like peeling an onion, one layer at a time), Devlin and Falco realize there is much more to the story than a murder for revenge。 I absolutely enjoyed reading this romantic suspense。 Excellent character portrayal and the mystery kept me guessing till the end。 The identity of the perp or their reason was something that I did not see it coming。 Certainly a shocker! 4。5⭐The final instalment in the fabulously gripping Falco and Devlin series delivers a crackingly suspenseful tale that keeps you guessing throughout。As Falco and Devlin are called in by their LT to investigate when an ex-cops wife and child are killed in an apparent arson attack at their home。 But what seems to be an open and shut case soon becomes more complicated when the detectives are informed that the mother and child were marked and the ex-cop once worked for the same LT that Falco did wh 4。5⭐The final instalment in the fabulously gripping Falco and Devlin series delivers a crackingly suspenseful tale that keeps you guessing throughout。As Falco and Devlin are called in by their LT to investigate when an ex-cops wife and child are killed in an apparent arson attack at their home。 But what seems to be an open and shut case soon becomes more complicated when the detectives are informed that the mother and child were marked and the ex-cop once worked for the same LT that Falco did whilst undercover。And with a parent who keeps admitting responsibility, lying and missing witnesses and Falco's old boss pulling strings that bring his undercover days back into sharp focus this was a great conclusion to the series and I would happily recommend it to others。**I was kindly provided with an ARC via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review** 。。。more

This story was, unsurprisingly, a murder mystery but it also brought back bad memories for Falco from his undercover days。 When the past collides with the present will Falco emerge unscathed?Detectives Kerri Devlin and Luke Falco are called to the scene of a house fire where, tragically, a mother, Jana Boothe, and her 5 year old daughter, Leah, have died。 The husband had been found unconscious in the front yard by a neighbour and, when roused, he tried to run in to save his family but to no avai This story was, unsurprisingly, a murder mystery but it also brought back bad memories for Falco from his undercover days。 When the past collides with the present will Falco emerge unscathed?Detectives Kerri Devlin and Luke Falco are called to the scene of a house fire where, tragically, a mother, Jana Boothe, and her 5 year old daughter, Leah, have died。 The husband had been found unconscious in the front yard by a neighbour and, when roused, he tried to run in to save his family but to no avail。 Jana and Leah were not burned and the black crosses on their foreheads suggested a drug or gang related killing。 Boothe himself is a former police officer from Luke’s former undercover unit。 Had he gone rogue? When questioned Boothe confesses to the killing。 Falco and Devlin are unconvinced。 For starters - how did he end up unconscious on the lawn? Why does the neighbour keep changing his story? And how is O’Grady’s undercover unit involved? The investigation keeps leading them to Falco’s former unit boss Lieutenant O’Grady who Falco claims is very bad news。 The team is a law unto itself and really skirts the law to get results。 Falco is no longer welcome with the group。 But the more they investigate the more O’Grady seems to be involved in something bad。At the same time grandma Boothe and grandma Scott (Jana’s mum) who don’t really get on that well are keeping secrets and plotting something。 This is one of the most interesting aspects of the story。 I really liked the rogue grannies! Falco has tried desperately to keep his past in the past。 He has not told Devlin anything about it as he is afraid he may have done something truly awful。 If only he could remember! This is possibly the best book in this series so far。 The plot was very interesting。 I did have suspicions which were correct but it was never a sure thing and I really enjoyed the way the story unfolded。 Many thanks to Netgalley and Thomas & Mercer for the much appreciated arc which I reviewed voluntarily and honestly。 。。。more

A Burning CaseEveryone seems to be lying, but maybe that’s the point of the mystery。 The book starts out strong, Luke and Kerri, police partners and lovers, are called out to investigate a fatal house fire。 Killed were Allison Booth and her daughter Leah, who is ill with leukemia。 Oddly enough, Logan Boothe, Allison’s estranged husband is found prostrate on the ground but apparently was able to revive himself and run into the house to try and save his daughter and wife。 There is a bevy of other A Burning CaseEveryone seems to be lying, but maybe that’s the point of the mystery。 The book starts out strong, Luke and Kerri, police partners and lovers, are called out to investigate a fatal house fire。 Killed were Allison Booth and her daughter Leah, who is ill with leukemia。 Oddly enough, Logan Boothe, Allison’s estranged husband is found prostrate on the ground but apparently was able to revive himself and run into the house to try and save his daughter and wife。 There is a bevy of other characters who confuse the plot on purpose, of course。 In order to help solve the murders, Luke Falco is forced to return to the “bad days,” when he worked with Lt。 Patrick O’Grady。 There’s old secrets among most of the characters which may justify the preponderance of lies。 The mystery was minimally exciting and leaves us with the old adage, “one must confront the past to save one’s future。”My gratitude to NetGalley and Thomas A。 Mercer for this pre-published book。 All opinions expressed are my own。 。。。more
